Exciting start to our “Sensorised surgery” research project

On 30 September 2024, we reached an important milestone: the official kick-off of our “Sensorised Surgery” project – with an inspiring first advisory board meeting! Thanks to the hybrid format, participants were able to contribute both on site and online via Zoom. Prof Guntinas Lichius summed it up perfectly: “We live in the age of Zoom.” Flexibility that enabled us to bring a wide variety of experts to the table.
We are particularly pleased to have such high-calibre advisory board members at our side, who come from different scientific and industrial fields and support us with their expertise:

– Dr Michael Kempe, Zeiss AG
– Dr Bernhard Messerschmidt, Grintech
– Jens Elbrecht, AFS
– Prof Laura Marcu, UC Davis
– Dr Andreas Karguth, GentleRobotics
– Cyrill von Tiesenhausen, B.Braun New Ventures GmbH
– Thomas Wartner, Nucleus Jena
– Peter Peitsch, microSensys

The first event was full of exciting insights! Our working groups presented their successes of the past year, with a particular focus on progress in sensorised surgery. One highlight was the presentation by Prof Laura Marcu (UC Davis). She presented biophotonic technologies developed by her and her group that have the potential to revolutionise surgery in the long term.
The ensuing discussion also got down to business: critical questions were openly addressed, new ideas developed and challenges analysed – exactly the creative exchange we had hoped for! Dr Phil Gärtig from the Carl Zeiss Foundation raised an exciting question: Can our technologies, which currently focus on accessible tumours, also be used for hard-to-reach tumours in the future?
The kick-off was a complete success and makes us confident that we will make great progress together in the coming phases of the project. We look forward to what lies ahead!
